What Does a Vision Mixer Do?
A vision mixer sits between the cameras and laptops and the screens and stream, and decides what the audience sees: switching, transitions, combining pictures, adding graphics and sending the result to several places at once.
The Roland VR-4HD: An All-in-One Vision Mixer
Our mixer is the Roland VR-4HD, a compact unit that does the work of several pieces of equipment.
Four Video Channels
Four sources, typically two PTZ cameras, a presenter's laptop and a remote meeting.
A Built-In Audio Mixer
Four mic inputs plus line inputs for music, with EQ, compression, automatic mixing and echo cancelling for remote guests.
Picture-in-Picture, Split Screen and Keying
Picture-in-picture, split screen and quad views, graphics, and eight memory presets.
Streaming Straight to a Computer
Over USB 3.0, in full HD, to YouTube Live, Vimeo, Zoom or Teams, with a preview output so the technician checks each source before it goes live.
How Coastal AV Uses the Vision Mixer
The same mixer runs our conference, live streaming, hybrid conference, wedding and funeral packages.
Do You Need a Vision Mixer for Your Event?
You probably do if you have more than one camera, stream or record for people who aren't there, or have Zoom or Teams guests. A small meeting with one presenter and one screen usually doesn't need one.
